If you enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, trout, perch or blue gill from a float tube or pontoon boat, Winder Reservoir is the perfect fishing trip. This is a small reservoir that is dedicated to float tubing only. You won't find any motorized boats on the lake. Usually you will have the whole place to yourself. There are 5 camping spots around the lake, depending on the water levels.
My favorite way to fish Winder for bass is to cast the Squidy Mangler inline spinner baits. They seem to catch just about every kind of fish in this lake. One cast you might have a nice bass and the next cast you could catch a rainbow trout, blue gill or perch. Crankbaits, swimbaits and jigs work well for the largemouth bass also. There are also ice fishing opportunities on this lake. Try our Jiggy Mangler propeller jigs for ice fishing this lake. The glow in the dark features really bring them in.
One night while I was camping on this bass reservoir a major lighting storm rolled through. It was pretty intense. The lightning strikes were very close and our camper was parked in the only trees on the lake.
I wish I would have gotten a picture of this huge owl I found on the lake. We heard it around the campfire all night long. In the morning I paddled my float tube over to the other side of the lake. I had already caught a few nice bass and looked up to see an owl standing approximately 3 ft tall standing on the bank. We had a pretty nice morning together. This owl was so beautiful it was hard to continue fishing, but it watched me catch fish all morning long. Unfortunately, I left my camera at camp accidentally.
Sometimes the trout seem to be a little weaker than the bass in the lake. I caught a nice rainbow trout and decided to release it back into the lake. I noticed that it had gone belly up. It was a little ways away from my float tube. I was determined to kick my float tube over and pick it up for lunch since it was dead. Then out of no where a hawk swooped down and picked it right off the top of the water.
If you are looking for a peaceful bass fishing weekend, you might want to consider fishing Winder Reservoir near Preston, Idaho. Don't forget to pick up some Mangler spinners, crankbaits, jigs and swimbaits before you head that way.
